How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to be aware of the audi a1 car key speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. 5. Tachometer
